Record the full product dimensions
Write down overall width, depth and height, plus any chaise, recliner or sleeper extension. Look for the manufacturer’s measurement diagram and confirm what can actually be removed. Detachable legs do not mean detachable arms.
Seat width and depth are separate from the outside footprint. Compare them with a sofa or chair you already find comfortable. If several people will use it, try sitting together where possible; a number on a product page cannot settle comfort.
Measure the room in use
Mark the sofa footprint on a simple plan and on the floor using a removable method that will not damage the surface. Include door swings, storage opening, heating equipment and the routes to other rooms.
Now account for people. Sit in the proposed location, put your feet forward and reach toward the table. If the sofa reclines or opens as a bed, model it fully extended. Measure the remaining space at its tightest point.
Map delivery from vehicle to final position
Start outside and work inward: gates, shared entrances, lifts, stair turns, landings, door frames and hallway corners. Note handrails, low lights and any building restrictions. An opening’s width alone does not prove that a long object can turn through it.
Ask the retailer or delivery team to review your route and their packaged dimensions before ordering. Supply measurements and clear photos if requested. Do not assume a diagonal calculation guarantees delivery; packaging, turning room and safe handling matter.
Create a one-page comparison
For each candidate, record overall size, usable seat, extended footprint, packaged size, removable components and delivery advice. Add the return terms and who pays if delivery fails. Confirm these details for the exact configuration you intend to buy.
If two sofas fit, choose based on how you sit and how the room is used. A smaller footprint with uncomfortable seating is not necessarily a better small-space purchase.

If a tight stair turn, inaccessible route or fixed obstacle remains unresolved, pause the order and request a professional delivery assessment. A room-planning image or generic calculator cannot certify it.
