Keep the grey sofa: warm colour, texture and wood

Before replacing a grey sofa, try a warm cushion, a different texture and a darker wood surface nearby. Those three changes can alter how the upholstery reads without replacing the largest piece in the room.

Look at the grey in your room

Hold a plain white sheet beside the upholstery in daylight. Does the grey lean blue, green, brown or violet? This is a comparison exercise, not an exact colour test. Repeat it with your evening lamps before ordering cushions.

Try rust, cream and petrol

For a cool slate-grey sofa, start with a rust cushion, a cream textured layer and a small amount of deep petrol in a print. Keep the grey visible. The room illustration uses that family, but your fabric and light may need warmer or cooler versions.

The Valenne shortlist

Give the grey a warmer neighbour.

Rust brings colour; beige adds texture; a striped wool throw introduces a larger pattern. Try one at a time.

Velvet cushion covers · set of two

Velvet cushions

Textiles

Rust; 18 x 18 inches; pack of 2 covers, inserts not included

Rust velvet brings a concentrated warm accent to grey, cream or dark upholstery.

Bouclé cushion covers · set of two

Bouclé cushions

Textiles

Beige / Natural Beige; 20 x 20 inches; pack of 2 covers, inserts not included

Beige bouclé adds texture while keeping the palette quiet beside a stronger print or colour.

Before you choose Covers only. Confirm the 20 × 20 in variant and the care instructions before ordering.

Green Pendleton Yakima throw with red, tan and black stripes

Yakima throw

Textiles

Green Heather · 54 × 66 in · 86% virgin wool, 14% cotton

A broad stripe gives plain upholstery a stronger pattern and ties green to warmer accents.

Before you choose Check the selected Green Heather colourway and the care label. Wool may feel different from a soft synthetic fleece.

Change the surface as well as the colour

Velvet catches light differently from flat upholstery; a nubby weave adds a second scale of texture. Try one of each, then sit down. If the sofa feels crowded or the fabrics are uncomfortable against your skin, remove a layer.

Choose covers by their actual dimensions

The product selections are similar accents, not the exact cushions in the illustration. Covers may be sold without inserts. Check the care label and measure your existing inserts before choosing a cover; colour names are not colour guarantees.

Give the grey something to contrast with

A darker wood table can separate visually from grey upholstery and pale flooring. Check its height from a seated position and make sure its base stays out of the route past the sofa. A walnut-coloured finish does not necessarily mean walnut timber.
