Follow the bentwood
The outer back curves down into the rear legs. An inner back rail, round seat frame and circular stretcher give the outline its rhythm. The cane-seat version keeps the centre of the seat visually light; Thonet also offers other seat variants.
The shipping idea mattered too
Thonet describes packing 36 disassembled chairs into one cubic metre, ready to assemble at their destination. The design story is as much about production and distribution as its recognisable curve.
Read the drawing as a material study
The poster highlights wood, cane and the stretcher. It is an editorial illustration, not a measured fabrication sheet. For dimensions, maintenance or ordering a current chair, use the manufacturer’s information for the exact variant.
Bring the idea into a room
You do not need a matching set of wood finishes to appreciate bentwood. Compare the lightness of the chair with your table and floor, then repeat a related tone elsewhere. Our wood guide below explains how to make that comparison.
